Job Application: Our Interview Tips for Success

Picture this: You have just received an email confirming that you have reached the interview stage. You are so excited; you are one step closer to your perfect role, and this is your chance to prove yourself! As you sit down, the nerves begin to settle in… what now?

Firstly, CONGRATULATIONS! Only 2% of candidates who apply for a job are selected to attend a job interview, and you are one of them. You have already impressed your prospective employers with your amazing application, but now they want to get to know the person behind it. Remember, the interview is a two-way process; it is a chance for you to ask questions and discover the work environment, so keep this in mind on the day.

For this week’s blog, we asked around the office for tips from both an interviewer’s and an interviewee’s perspective.

So, before the big day…

Preparation is Key – You need to make sure you know about the role, company, and even the department you are applying for. Read through your job description again, look at the company website and social media. Note what stands out to you and even identify what could be improved and how YOU could make that change!

Consider questions to ask – At the end of the interview, the interviewer will invite you to ask any questions. This is your chance to show your enthusiasm for the role. Our suggestions are:

  • Ask about the team and working environment.
  • Ask the interviewer about their personal experience working in the company.
  • Think of questions specific to the role.

Plan your journey ahead of time – Consider how you are getting there. Is there a lot of traffic? Where are you going to park? Try to aim to get there early. If the interview is online, check your WIFI connection, make sure your device and software are working properly to avoid any issues on the day.

What are you going to wear? – There is no harm in asking your interviewer if there is a dress code, but if in doubt, go for smart casual. Once again, your research into the company will help you decide what sort of outfit to choose.

On the day…

Wake up early – It’s normal to feel anxious, so you want to take things easy, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Remember, you’ve done all the preparation work; now, take this time to do things at your own pace. Perhaps treat yourself to your favourite breakfast or a hot drink. You could even have a last read through your interview notes.

Do some final checks – Make sure you have all your documents ready and double-check the traffic to ensure you don’t need to adjust your leaving time. If your interview is online, make sure everything is still working as it should so you can connect to the call with no issues.

Be Yourself! – At the end of the day, the interviewer wants to get to know you, to see if you would work well in their team. Consider your body language, maintain eye contact, and stay positive.

Remember, reaching the interview stage is a significant achievement, and it’s your opportunity to shine and secure your dream job. As long as you put in the preparation, you are already on the pathway to success. So, take a deep breath, sit up, smile, and showcase your true self. Good luck!
